David Hesmondhalgh, PI of the MUSICSTREAM project, is one of the co-authors of a new study of the Indian recorded music industry, just published in Contemporary South Asia. Lead-written by University of Leeds Postgraduate Researcher Aditya Lal, and co-written with Professor Charles Umney, the article shows how platformisation has ushered in a new wave of non-film music that is posing unprecedented challenges to the cultural hegemony of film music, but how it has also accelerated demands for copyright reform. While this may benefit some musicians, the article shows that platformisation may well reinforce the domination of powerful local record companies, with potentially negative impacts on musicians.
